The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has celebrated the historic appointment of Nigerian development expert Thelma Ekiyor-Solanke as the first Black international Chief Executive Officer of Women for Women International, describing the development as a major milestone for Nigeria and the global African diaspora.

In a statement issued by the Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Commission said the appointment represents a landmark achievement that reflects the growing global recognition of Nigerian professionals and their contributions to inclusive development across the world.

According to the statement, Ekiyor-Solanke, a distinguished Nigerian professional and social impact leader, brings decades of experience in economic empowerment, gender advocacy and sustainable development to her new role.

As international CEO of Women for Women International, she will lead the organisation’s global mission to support women survivors of war and conflict by helping them rebuild their lives through education, financial empowerment and community support programmes implemented across several countries.

Reacting to the appointment, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the development as “a proud and defining moment for Nigeria and the diaspora.”

She said Ekiyor-Solanke’s emergence at the helm of the global organisation reflects the resilience, brilliance and far-reaching impact of Nigerians making meaningful contributions around the world.

“Thelma Ekiyor-Solanke’s appointment not only breaks barriers but also inspires a new generation of Nigerian women and young leaders to aspire to global leadership positions,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to recognising and supporting Nigerians in the diaspora who continue to distinguish themselves in various sectors globally, while encouraging stronger collaboration to spotlight the achievements of Nigerian professionals driving positive change on the international stage.
