The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has declared open a strategic executive leadership retreat for Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs), as part of efforts to drive ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
The two-day retreat, holding at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, is organised by the Police Reform Secretariat in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, bringing together top-ranking officers to chart a new course for institutional transformation.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the retreat marks a significant milestone in the Force’s reform agenda, with deliberations focused on strengthening leadership capacity, accountability, and operational efficiency.
During the session, Olu Ogunsakin, who heads the Police Reform Secretariat and serves as Director General of the National Institute for Policy Studies, highlighted key achievements under the Supporting Police Accountability and Transformation (SPAT) programme. The initiative is funded by the UNDP and the German Federal Foreign Office.
Ogunsakin disclosed that several transformative reforms are ready for implementation, including a fully revised national recruit curriculum—the first comprehensive update since 1968—as well as a modern, rights-based framework captured in the newly gazetted Nigeria Police Regulations 2025.
In his remarks, Disu described the retreat as a cornerstone of his policy direction centred on sustainable and impactful reform, stressing that leadership at the highest level must be driven by vision, accountability, and the ability to inspire public trust.
He noted that the true measure of success from the engagement would be seen in tangible improvements across commands nationwide, particularly in operational effectiveness, discipline, and respect for human rights.
The retreat also features technical sessions on evidence-based budgeting, community policing strategies, and digital transformation, underscoring the Force’s commitment to evolving into a more transparent and citizen-focused institution.
As proceedings continue through March 25, the Nigeria Police leadership reaffirmed its appreciation to the UNDP and other international partners for their continued support in strengthening Nigeria’s policing system.
