The Nigerian Navy has intensified efforts to strengthen maritime security operations as the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, charged commanders across naval formations to leverage intelligence and technology in combating criminal activities within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Vice Admiral Abbas gave the directive during a strategic meeting with Flag Officers Commanding, commanders of tri-service operations, operational bases and logistics groups at the Naval Headquarters on 10 March 2026. The meeting brought together senior commanders from various commands, units and establishments of the Navy to review ongoing operations and chart new strategies aimed at enhancing the service’s operational effectiveness.
Addressing the commanders, the Naval Chief emphasised the importance of intensifying naval operations to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and decisively tackle criminal activities within the maritime environment. He urged them to remain committed to the service’s core values of professionalism, integrity and teamwork while sustaining the operational momentum across all theatres.
The meeting, which came four months after the naval chief assumed office, formed part of a broader effort to rejig Nigerian Navy operations in line with the objectives outlined in the Navy’s Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy. The engagement also followed an extensive operational tour undertaken by the Chief of the Naval Staff to interact directly with personnel across naval formations and consult with key stakeholders on ways to strengthen the service’s operational capabilities.
According to the naval chief, the ongoing reforms are designed to build a modern, agile and professional naval force capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests and supporting national security objectives in synergy with other security agencies.
Vice Admiral Abbas commended the operational successes recorded under the Navy’s flagship initiative, Operation DELTA SENTINEL, alongside other maritime security operations being conducted across the country’s waters. He noted that the growing reliance on intelligence-led and technology-driven operations has yielded significant results, including the seizure of stolen crude oil, the destruction of illegal refining sites, the arrest of illegal bunkerers and improved search-and-rescue missions.
He explained that these achievements have contributed to the elimination of piracy incidents within Nigeria’s territorial waters, boosted national oil production and prevented billions of naira from being lost to criminal networks operating in the maritime sector.
The Chief of the Naval Staff also acknowledged the critical role played by naval personnel in ongoing counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations across joint military theatres nationwide. He urged commanders to sustain collaboration with sister services and other security agencies to ensure continued success in the fight against insecurity.
While emphasising that expectations from the presidency and the nation remain high, the naval chief called on commanders to work diligently to accomplish all assigned tasks and ensure that the gains recorded in naval operations are sustained.
Vice Admiral Abbas further reiterated his command philosophy, which he said is anchored on discipline, integrity, merit, accountability and personnel welfare. He stressed that merit must always be rewarded to inspire excellence within the service and encouraged commanders to take personal responsibility for the personnel and equipment under their command.
He also urged them to ensure that resources allocated to their formations are effectively utilised to strengthen operational efficiency and improve the overall system within the Navy.
