As the world commemorates International Women’s Day 2026, the Nigeria Police Force has celebrated the invaluable contributions of women in law enforcement, acknowledging their growing influence, professionalism and dedication to safeguarding lives and property across the country.
In a message marking the global observance, the police leadership highlighted the remarkable role female officers continue to play in strengthening policing operations, justice delivery and community safety in Nigeria. The Force noted that women within its ranks have consistently demonstrated resilience, competence and leadership across various operational and administrative departments.
Aligning with this year’s international theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, paid glowing tribute to female personnel of the Force, commending their courage, discipline and unwavering commitment to duty.
The police chief emphasised that women officers have continued to distinguish themselves in a profession historically dominated by men, steadily breaking barriers and expanding their presence in key policing roles ranging from investigations and intelligence gathering to community policing, peacekeeping and leadership positions.
According to the Force, the achievements recorded by female officers in the Nigeria Police reflect not only personal determination but also the growing recognition of women’s capabilities in maintaining law and order and supporting national security efforts.
The leadership of the Force observed that women in the police have made significant strides in crime prevention, conflict resolution and victim support services, particularly in cases involving gender-based violence, child protection and community engagement. Their empathy, professionalism and commitment to justice have, according to the police, strengthened public trust and enhanced service delivery within the institution.
The statement further stressed that the observance of International Women’s Day serves as an important reminder of the need to build a society where women and girls are respected, protected and provided equal opportunities to achieve their full potential.
The Force also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality within the institution by encouraging greater participation of women in policing, leadership and decision-making processes.
Police authorities noted that over the years, deliberate efforts have been made to create a more inclusive working environment that supports the career growth and welfare of female officers. These efforts include increased opportunities for professional training, leadership development programmes and policies designed to ensure that women within the Force can thrive while balancing the demands of service.
The Nigeria Police further emphasised that empowering women in law enforcement is essential not only for institutional development but also for strengthening democratic governance and national security.
Reiterating its support for gender inclusion, the Force pledged to continue recognising the sacrifices and achievements of women within its ranks while encouraging more Nigerian women to pursue careers in law enforcement.
The police leadership also called on citizens to join hands in creating a more equitable society where the rights of women and girls are protected and where their voices are respected in all spheres of national life.
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, the Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed that women remain indispensable partners in the pursuit of justice, peace and sustainable security across the country.
