The Nigeria Customs Service has honoured one of its senior officers, Dera Nnadi, as he formally retired from active service after a distinguished career marked by dedication to national service and institutional development.

The colourful ceremony, held on 3 March 2026 at the Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, brought together members of the Customs management team, senior officers, family members and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate the remarkable career of the retiring Deputy Comptroller-General. The occasion was particularly symbolic as it coincided with his 60th birthday, turning the event into both a retirement ceremony and a milestone birthday celebration.

Leading the tributes, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, described DCG Nnadi as an exemplary officer whose professionalism, discipline and unwavering commitment to duty significantly strengthened the operational capacity and core values of the Service.

According to the Customs boss, the event provided an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of a dedicated officer but also to recognise the sacrifices made by personnel who devote their careers to safeguarding the nation’s economic and border security interests.

“Today is a moment of celebration and reflection. It is also an opportunity for us to thank Almighty God for the grace that has sustained our colleague throughout his years of service,” Adeniyi said.

He also spoke about the personal and professional relationship he shares with the retiree, noting that their bond extends beyond official duties to family ties. The Comptroller-General expressed confidence that despite his retirement, Nnadi still possesses the experience, energy and intellect to continue contributing meaningfully to national development, particularly through academic and professional engagements.

Members of the Customs management team also paid glowing tributes to the retired officer, commending his leadership style, integrity and dedication to mentoring younger officers within the Service. Many officers who served under him described him as a dependable leader who provided guidance and encouragement while helping to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Service.

In his response, DCG Dera Nnadi expressed gratitude to the Comptroller-General, the management team and officers and men of the Service for their support and cooperation throughout his career. He described his journey in the Nigeria Customs Service as a fulfilling experience defined by growth, learning and commitment to serving the nation.

The ceremony featured the presentation of awards, gift items and commemorative photographs in honour of the retiring senior officer, marking the close of a career widely regarded as impactful within the Service.
