Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening strategic relations with the Republic of Türkiye as part of a broader effort to strengthen national security, enhance institutional capacity and expand economic cooperation between both countries.
The Honourable Minister of Interior made this known following his participation in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent official visit to Türkiye, describing the engagement as a significant step toward advancing Nigeria’s security architecture and economic development agenda.
In a statement signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Interior, Mary Ali, the Minister explained that the visit focused on consolidating bilateral cooperation in critical areas such as security, migration management, border control, law enforcement capacity-building and institutional collaboration.
He noted that both countries are also working towards supporting the shared objective of increasing Nigeria–Türkiye bilateral trade volume to five billion dollars, in line with President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy drive.
According to the Minister, the engagements were guided by clear implementation frameworks, mutual accountability and measurable deliverables, ensuring that agreements reached are not merely symbolic but are designed to translate into practical outcomes.
“These partnerships are directly aligned with Nigeria’s national security architecture and economic priorities. They are essential for tackling transnational crimes, addressing irregular migration and strengthening internal security, while also unlocking opportunities in trade, technology transfer and skills development,” he said.
The Minister stressed that Türkiye’s experience in security sector reform, border technology, defence industry development and institutional efficiency presents valuable lessons and collaboration opportunities for Nigeria.
He added that the Federal Government remains determined to leverage such international partnerships to modernise security operations, improve border management systems and enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies.
Beyond security, the Minister highlighted that expanded cooperation with Türkiye would create new windows for Nigerian businesses, attract investments and promote industrial growth through technology exchange and vocational training.
He further stated that the Government values public engagement and constructive feedback, noting that transparency and accountability remain central to the implementation of all bilateral agreements.
According to him, the Tinubu administration is committed to ensuring that diplomatic engagements deliver tangible benefits that improve national security, stimulate economic growth and strengthen public confidence in government institutions.
The Minister assured Nigerians that through sustained diplomacy, strategic partnerships and responsible governance, the country will continue to advance towards a safer, more stable and more prosperous future.
