The Christmas season is traditionally a period of prayers, praises, meditation, sober reflection, and joyful celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. However, beneath the festive atmosphere lies a stark reality: many families, particularly widows and the less privileged, are unable to afford decent clothing or enjoy good meals during this season of goodwill.
It is against this backdrop that Chief Emmanuel Okewulonu, Ikeoha Okigwe (popularly known as Surpriser), a philanthropist of notable benevolent disposition, has continued and expanded his annual humanitarian outreach dedicated to one of the most vulnerable groups in society—widows. Through his widely acclaimed Widows’ Day initiative, Chief Okewulonu has consistently demonstrated compassion, empathy, and a deep commitment to social responsibility.
The Widows’ Day programme, observed annually on December 26, initially began in Avutu and was later extended to Obowo. This year, driven by what observers have described as his irrepressible magnanimity and unwavering concern for humanity, Chief Okewulonu has taken the bold step of expanding the initiative to cover the entire Okigwe Zone.
According to organisers, the 2025 edition of Ikeoha’s Widows’ Day will witness the distribution of thousands of high-quality clothing materials, bags of rice, pasta, noodles, cooking oil, condiments, cash gifts, and other essential relief items. These materials will be shared among widows and other carefully identified indigent persons, with the aim of easing economic hardship and restoring dignity during the festive period.
A particularly remarkable aspect of this year’s outreach is that it comes at a time when the sponsor recently concluded participation in a major federal election, an exercise that involved enormous financial commitments before, during, and after the polls, including proceedings at the election tribunal. Despite the attendant losses and pressures, Chief Okewulonu has remained steadfast in his humanitarian pursuits.
Rather than withdrawing from public life or focusing solely on personal recovery—as many might have done—he has chosen to persevere on his path of service to humanity. This rare resilience, coupled with an abiding concern for the welfare of the people, has continued to earn him widespread admiration across the zone.
As preparations intensify for December 26, expectations are high that many sorrowful hearts will be gladdened, burdens will be lifted, and countless faces will beam with smiles—courtesy of Ikeoha’s generosity and what supporters describe as the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
The Ikeoha Solidarity Forum has called on individuals, groups, and leaders to draw inspiration from this initiative, stressing that collective acts of kindness, no matter how small, can significantly improve society.
