The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has called on newly promoted senior officers of the Nigerian Army to justify the trust placed in them by demonstrating renewed dedication, enhanced professionalism and unwavering loyalty to the nation. He gave the charge in Abuja during the decoration of 28 Brigadier Generals elevated to the rank of Major General, a ceremony that included one posthumous promotion.
The event, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1, Asokoro, was attended by top government officials, military commanders, and dignitaries from across the defence and security community.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, General Musa who served as Special Guest of Honour commended the officers for their years of sacrifice, courage and professionalism. He said their promotion reflects their steadfast commitment to strengthening national security and advancing the strategic objectives of the Nigerian Army.
“These officers are among the finest leaders in our Armed Forces,” the Defence Minister said, expressing personal pride in their achievements. He urged them to approach emerging security challenges with renewed resolve, noting that their new responsibilities position them as key actors in shaping the Army’s operational direction.
General Musa also stressed the importance of inter-service cooperation, improved intelligence sharing and unity of effort among security agencies. He acknowledged the critical support of the families of the newly promoted officers and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improved welfare, better resources and enhanced operational capabilities for the Armed Forces. He further conveyed the congratulations of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to the officers.
In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described the ceremony as an important milestone that celebrates officers who have consistently demonstrated integrity, competence and loyalty. He reaffirmed that the Nigerian Army maintains a transparent and merit-based promotion system and noted that elevation remains a strong motivator within the military.
He highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at boosting morale and improving welfare, including strengthened healthcare services, upgraded infrastructure and a more conducive environment for operational and professional excellence. According to him, the new ranks reflect confidence in the officers’ ability to take on higher responsibilities and contribute to national and global peace efforts.
Speaking on behalf of the newly promoted generals, Major General Francis Omata expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for approving their promotions. He pledged unwavering loyalty and reaffirmed their dedication to national service. He also lauded the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Army Staff for their guidance, leadership and mentorship.
