The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday conferred the prestigious title of Ambassador-in-Situ on nineteen career diplomats in recognition of their distinguished service to Nigeria’s diplomatic corps.

The investiture ceremony, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, Tafawa Balewa House in Abuja, was presided over by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and attended by senior government officials, public office holders and other distinguished guests.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the ceremony marked an important milestone in the professional advancement of officers of the Nigerian Foreign Service.

Delivering the keynote address, Tuggar described the conferment of the Ambassador-in-Situ title as a defining moment in the career progression of diplomats, noting that the rank goes beyond honour and recognition.

“The rank of Ambassador represents not only recognition of dedication and excellence but also a heightened responsibility to uphold Nigeria’s image and advance its foreign policy objectives,” the minister said.

He stressed the need for continued professionalism within the diplomatic service and underscored the importance of adopting a balanced approach in the appointment of Heads of Mission.

The nineteen officers honoured at the ceremony were elevated to the title following their promotion to the rank of Deputy Director within the Federal Civil Service, a development the Ministry said reflects their commitment, professionalism and contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy engagement.

Speaking on behalf of the honourees, Suleiman Mohammed Ousman expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Ministry and the Federal Government for the recognition.

“We are deeply grateful for this honour and recognition. We remain committed to serving Nigeria with professionalism, integrity and dedication to the advancement of our national interests,” he said.

In his closing remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, congratulated the newly invested ambassadors and urged them to maintain the highest standards of diplomacy.

Ahmed noted that their elevation comes at a critical time in Nigeria’s engagement with the international community and charged them to remain steadfast in promoting the country’s interests across the globe.

The Ministry said the investiture underscores its commitment to merit, institutional excellence and capacity building within Nigeria’s diplomatic architecture.
