The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports suggesting that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, called on Nigerians to bear arms, stressing that his remarks were misrepresented.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ clarified that during a Channels Television interview on Thursday, 20 August 2025, the CDS only encouraged citizens to acquire basic survival and self-protection skills, likening them to widely accepted life skills such as swimming, driving, taekwondo, judo, and boxing.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the CDS did not call for citizens to bear arms or engage in unlawful possession of firearms,” the statement read. “He is fully aware of Nigerian laws prohibiting the unauthorized carrying of weapons. His message was intended to promote personal resilience, situational awareness and lawful preparedness not to encourage illegal activity.”
Brigadier General Gusau stressed that General Musa’s advocacy was centred on enhancing personal safety and national security consciousness through skills that empower individuals without violating the law. He urged the public to avoid twisting the CDS’ comments, noting that misinterpretation of such sensitive issues could cause unnecessary panic and misinformation.
The Defence Headquarters further reassured Nigerians that the Armed Forces, alongside other security agencies, continue to record major operational successes across the country in the fight against terrorism, banditry, insurgency and other criminal threats. These gains, it said, demonstrate the government’s sustained commitment to protecting lives and property and to ensuring peace and stability.
“Promoting security awareness at all levels is important. Basic skills such as unarmed self-defence, swimming and driving are valuable life skills that enhance individual preparedness and contribute to national security,” the statement added.
The DHQ also called on Nigerians to rely on verified sources and official statements when interpreting public pronouncements, and to avoid spreading distorted or misleading accounts. It reaffirmed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to safeguarding the safety, peace, and well-being of all Nigerians.
