As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has led a high-level delegation to the United States to attend a Programme Management Review Meeting focused on the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters. The strategic meeting, which took place from 9th to 13th June 2025 in San Diego, California, brought together senior officials from the United States Government and representatives of Bell Textron, the manufacturers of the AH-1Z platforms.
According to a statement signed by the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the meeting marks a major milestone in the bilateral defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States. It underscores the shared commitment to advancing Nigeria’s air power capabilities amid evolving security threats.
In his address during the engagement, Air Marshal Abubakar conveyed the NAF’s appreciation to the U.S. Government for its longstanding strategic partnership. “We are deeply grateful to the United States Government for its enduring strategic partnership with Nigeria,” he said. He emphasized that the AH-1Z Vipers, when delivered, would greatly enhance the Air Force’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness.
He also affirmed the NAF’s commitment to accelerating the procurement process, stating, “We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time. Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process.”
Following the meeting in San Diego, the Air Chief visited Camp Pendleton in California, where he toured the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) and the Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39), both of which operate under Marine Aircraft Group 39. These units are actively engaged in the operation and sustainment of the AH-1Z helicopter.
During his visit, Air Marshal Abubakar had the opportunity to inspect the aircraft firsthand and interact with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps to gain deeper insights into best practices regarding the operation, maintenance, and logistical support of the AH-1Z platform. “This visit has provided a unique opportunity to understand best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistical support of the AH-1Z platform from the United States Marine Corps,” he stated.
The Air Chief reaffirmed that the NAF remains committed to the responsible and effective deployment of all acquired air assets in the ongoing fight against terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements threatening national peace and stability. “Our goal is to create enduring peace while protecting innocent lives and property in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement,” he noted.
He concluded by expressing profound appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support and strategic guidance. “The progress made in the AH-1Z acquisition project is a direct reflection of the President’s steadfast commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture,” the CAS affirmed.
