In a decisive move to tackle the rising incidence of road traffic crashes and restore discipline to Nigeria’s transportation system, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, His Excellency Engr. Abdullahi Sule, on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, officially flagged off Operation Sanity, a strategic road safety campaign jointly executed with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The corps spokesperson ACM Olusegun Ogungbemide in an official signed statement disclosed that the campaign was launched during a mobile court session in Lafia, the state capital, and witnessed the presence of the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Head of Service, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, and other members of the State Executive Council. The initiative represents a broad-based effort to enforce traffic laws, raise safety awareness, and promote responsible driving practices across the state.

Addressing the audience at the event, Governor Sule declared that the era of recklessness on Nasarawa roads is over. He affirmed the state government’s resolve to prioritize road safety and support the FRSC’s mission by intensifying public enlightenment efforts, deploying resources for enforcement, and ensuring strong institutional collaboration.

“The Government of Nasarawa State is fully committed to safeguarding the lives of our people. Through ‘Operation Sanity,’ we are setting a new standard for responsible road use. We will utilize every platform available to amplify this campaign and work hand-in-hand with the FRSC to enforce compliance,” the Governor stated.

He urged residents to embrace the campaign and join forces with law enforcement agencies to curb the rising tide of road crashes. “Road safety is not just the job of government or the FRSC it is a collective responsibility that rests on all of us,” he emphasized.

Also speaking at the event, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described Operation Sanity as a multi-dimensional enforcement strategy designed to restore order on the roads. According to him, the campaign will incorporate mobile court sittings, targeted traffic operations, stakeholder engagement, and public awareness drives aimed at changing dangerous road behaviors.

He stated that Nasarawa State is now positioned to serve as a benchmark for traffic safety reforms in Nigeria, stressing that the initiative would not only save lives but also boost socio-economic development by ensuring safer, more efficient transportation systems.

“This holistic approach is not just about enforcement it is about enlightenment, responsibility, and collaboration. Together, we will make Nasarawa’s roads models of safety for the rest of the country,” the Corps Marshal remarked.

The launch of Operation Sanity is expected to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of traffic crashes in the state, setting a strong example for other states to emulate.
