The Nigerian Army has formally addressed public concerns surrounding the detention of Corporal Amina Sani Maidoki, stating that her confinement is in accordance with due military procedure following allegations of misconduct, including theft.

In a statement made available by Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director Army Public Relations, the Army acknowledged the wave of sentiment the case has generated across media and public platforms but maintained that due process is being strictly adhered to in the ongoing investigation.

“The Nigerian Army (NA) acknowledges the concerns raised regarding the case of Corporal Amina Sani Maidoki, who is currently in detention following allegations of theft. We understand the sentimental emotions it has stirred within the public and the media. However, it is imperative to set the records straight in the spirit of fairness,” the statement read.

The Army clarified that Corporal Maidoki’s detention is linked to allegations of conduct deemed inconsistent with the values of the military institution and emphasized that her current status is purely investigatory in nature.

“Essentially, Corporal Maidoki is currently under investigation in connection with allegations of conduct inconsistent with the core values of the Nigerian Army, including but not limited to allegation of theft,” the statement explained.

The Army further underscored that disciplinary procedures in the service are never arbitrary but are guided by the Armed Forces Act (Cap A20 LFN 2004), internal military codes, and established ethical standards.

“As a professional military institution, the NA is guided by extant provisions of the Armed Forces Act, internal regulations, and the highest standards of military ethics. Consequently, her temporary detention is in accordance with the lawful procedures stipulated for service personnel.”

Refuting claims of unlawful detention or denial of legal representation, the Army asserted that Corporal Maidoki’s rights are being fully respected and that she continues to receive standard welfare provisions.

“The Nigerian Army categorically denies any allegation of unlawful detention, or denial of legal representation. All such claims are false and are rendered simply to mislead the public and draw undue sentiments,” the Army stated.

While affirming its commitment to transparency, the Army also appealed to the public to refrain from speculative reports and commentary, noting that updates will be provided as appropriate.

“We urge the general public and media to refrain from speculative commentary and allow the ongoing internal processes to run without interference,” the statement added.

Expressing empathy for the concerns raised by Corporal Maidoki’s family, the Army reiterated its openness to lawful engagement and communication, provided they conform with the procedures currently in place.

“The NA remains open to lawful communication and engagement provided such interactions align with the operational and investigative procedures currently in place.”

The Army concluded the statement by reaffirming its stance on justice and discipline within its ranks.

“The Nigerian Army ensures that the rights of all accused are respected irrespective of the persons involved. However, no individual is above the law or exempt from military discipline. Allegations of misconduct must be addressed thoroughly and lawfully to preserve the integrity, cohesion, and effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.”

The public is advised to remain calm and allow military justice mechanisms to take their course.
