The Nigerian Army has launched a thorough investigation into allegations that its personnel assaulted a police detective during a traditional leadership election in Ebonyi State.

A video circulating on social media shows what appears to be an altercation involving military personnel and a police officer in the Mgbom N’Achara Community of Ohaozara Local Government Area on 1 May 2025. The incident reportedly occurred while the police detective was on duty monitoring the community’s traditional election process.

In response to the viral footage, the Chief of Army Staff has ordered an immediate and transparent probe to determine the circumstances surrounding the presence and conduct of the personnel at the event.

“The Chief of Army Staff has directed a thorough and transparent investigation into the allegation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the presence and conduct of the personnel at the said event,” said Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement issued on Monday, 19 May 2025.

She added that the investigation underscores the Army’s commitment to upholding professionalism and accountability in the execution of its constitutional duties.

While the inquiry is underway, the Army has appealed to the public to remain calm, assuring that the outcome will be made public in the interest of transparency. “Any personnel found guilty in connection with this sad development will be duly sanctioned, in line with extant military regulations and procedures,” the statement read.

Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law, the Army reiterated its readiness to assist civil authorities when called upon and emphasized the value it places on public trust and cooperation.

“The Nigerian Army remains professional and solely committed to its constitutional roles… and continues to discharge its duties with integrity, professionalism, and dedication to national peace, security, and stability,” Lt. Col. Anele stated.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to be made public in the coming days.
