The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has completed the installation of the cutting-edge Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite system, a major upgrade poised to significantly boost weather forecasting and early warning capabilities across the country.

This milestone follows the official unveiling of the PUMA 2025 – MTG platform on Monday, May 5th, 2025, and culminated in the full deployment of the Preparation for Use of Meteosat in Africa (PUMA 2025) and the Intra-ACP Climate Services and Related Applications (ClimSA) Satellite Receiving System at NiMet headquarters on Friday, May 9th.

The newly deployed MTG system replaces the older MSG 2015 platform and introduces a centralized, internet-based interface that enables real-time access to satellite imagery and atmospheric sounding data across NiMet forecast offices nationwide. This innovation allows multiple locations to access the system simultaneously without the need for separate installations, offering improved efficiency and cost savings.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, NiMet Director General and CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, commended the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the African Union Commission (AUC), the European Union, and technical partner Tecnavia, particularly Engineer Pierre Harris Koumda, for their support and expertise in making the project a reality.

Anosike described the MTG system as a game-changer that marks the beginning of a new phase in severe weather prediction and disaster risk reduction in Nigeria.
