The Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) welcomed a high-level delegation from the Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, as part of a strategic engagement to deepen collaboration on military professionalism and the protection of civilians during conflict. The visit took place at the College Conference Room in Asokoro, Abuja.

In a statement released by Major Hashimu Sa’ad Abdullahi, the College’s Public Relations Officer, the visit was aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation between AWCN and CIVIC, particularly in fostering ethical standards and operational best practices within the armed forces.

Leading the CIVIC team, Mr. Vianney Bisimwa, Director for Africa, commended AWCN for its commitment to professionalism and ongoing partnership with CIVIC. He stressed that modern military success must go beyond tactical victories to include the protection of civilians in conflict-affected areas.

“Protecting civilian lives is not merely a moral responsibility; it is a strategic necessity,” Bisimwa stated. He added that institutions like AWCN are crucial to nurturing a military ethos grounded in restraint, accountability, and respect for human dignity.

In response, the Commandant of AWCN expressed gratitude for the visit and reaffirmed the College’s dedication to training strategic military leaders who are not only operationally competent but also ethically guided.

“Today’s strategic leadership demands a balance of military skill and humanitarian sensitivity,” the Commandant said. “Our command philosophy is focused on consolidating AWCN as a premier center for professional military education. This vision aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s agenda to build a disciplined and professional Nigerian Army.”

He further emphasized that collaboration with organizations like CIVIC is vital in achieving these objectives and enhancing the operational effectiveness of military personnel in accordance with global standards.

The courtesy visit concluded with a symbolic exchange of souvenirs, the signing of the visitors’ book, and a commemorative group photograph, signifying a renewed commitment to future joint initiatives that prioritize responsible military leadership and civilian protection in conflict environments.
