The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, respect for human rights and public trust as essential pillars of effective law enforcement in a democratic society.
Disu stated this on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the launch of Beyond the Bullets: Policing Terrorism in a Democratic System, authored by retired Inspector-General of Police, MD Abubakar, PhD, at the Police Resource Centre, Abuja.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the IGP said the book’s central message aligns with the current direction of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasising that effective policing requires more than the use of force.
He identified the rule of law, professional competence and public trust as critical elements in combating crime and terrorism while upholding democratic principles.
The police chief urged officers and members of the public to read the book not merely as a record of past events but as a resource for understanding the need for sustained police reforms, professionalism and adherence to democratic values.
He stressed that counterterrorism efforts must remain within the bounds of the law and be consistent with constitutional obligations and respect for fundamental human rights.
Disu also commended Abubakar for his leadership during a challenging period of insurgency and terrorism in the country, noting that his commitment to democratic policing demonstrated that decisive action against crime could be pursued without compromising constitutional principles.
Describing the publication as a valuable resource for policymakers, security practitioners, scholars and the general public, the IGP said it drew on decades of operational command, strategic thinking and sacrifice.
He expressed confidence that the lessons contained in the book would provide useful guidance for current and future police leaders as they navigate the complexities of law enforcement in a democratic society.
The IGP, on behalf of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, congratulated the retired police chief on the publication and endorsed its public presentation.
