The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has scheduled the release of its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) for Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

This year’s event, themed ‘The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development’, highlights the vital role of timely weather warnings in building resilience across various sectors, driving sustainable development and socio-economic growth.

The Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) is an annual publication that provides in-depth forecasts on crucial climatic variables such as rainfall and temperature patterns across Nigeria. Released every year in the first quarter, the SCP embodies the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) dedication to keeping the government and the public informed about weather, climate, and water-related matters.

The SCP serves as a vital tool for policy-making, planning, and decision-making across various sectors, including agriculture, aviation, construction, water resources, health, trade, and tourism. By providing timely and accurate climate information, NiMet aims to support sustainable development, ensure food security, and enhance the resilience of Nigerian communities.

Highlighting the importance of the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike said; “The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital Weather and Climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in the following sectors during the year: Agriculture, Aviation, Disaster Risk Management, Health, Oil & Gas, Telecommunication, Tourism, Transport (Water and Land), Power (hydro and renewable), Water Resources Management etc”.

Additionally, Anosike noted that; “The socioeconomic implications of the expected rainfall and temperature patterns for some sectors of the economy are also presented in the publication”.

The forecast information provided in the SCP document includes the onset and cessation dates of the 2025 rainy season; the length of the cropping season; the total amount of rainfall expected in all the 774 Local Government Areas of the Country; temperature (January – May) as well as Malaria and Meningitis vigilance forecast.

The Seasonal Climate Prediction document is a national document and the public presentation attracts guests from the public and private sectors, development partners, non-governmental organizations, the diplomatic community, farmers associations, etc.

The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, will moderate  the public presentation of the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP).

This event will be multifaceted, featuring not only the SCP but also several other key initiatives. These include the launch of a summary version of the SCP specifically designed for policymakers, as well as translations of the document into three major Nigerian languages to ensure broader accessibility and understanding.
