The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has engaged community leaders and residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, over concerns that ongoing recovery operations at the site of its crashed aircraft could affect their water source, assuring them of its commitment to addressing the issues.
The engagement was led by the Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, who visited the community on the directive of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke.
According to an official statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the visit was aimed at addressing residents’ concerns and strengthening cooperation with the community during the recovery operation.
During the engagement, Ekwueme acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and assured them that the NAF would work through appropriate channels to address the issues. He also appreciated the community for its patience and cooperation during the difficult period.
The statement noted that recovery operations were progressing despite challenging terrain and difficult underwater conditions, with the main wreckage still submerged and deeply embedded in the riverbed.
It explained that multiple pumping machines had been deployed to remove water from the area surrounding the crash site, a crucial step towards gaining access to the wreckage.
The NAF said the recovery process required sustained efforts, specialised technical support and careful coordination to ensure that personnel could work safely and effectively under the difficult conditions.
The Service also acknowledged the grief of the bereaved families and concerns among Nigerians awaiting further developments, assuring that recovery personnel remained committed to the operation while upholding the dignity of the victims.
Beyond the recovery exercise, the Chief of the Air Staff reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to supporting affected families through the processing of applicable entitlements, including benevolent funds, scholarships for eligible children and other approved welfare benefits.
The statement added that the Service had established a dedicated helpline at the Headquarters Nigerian Air Force to facilitate access to timely and appropriate information for affected families.
The NAF reiterated its commitment to maintaining engagement with the Igbokoda community, addressing environmental concerns through appropriate channels and providing verified updates on significant developments as recovery operations continue.
