The Association of Women Town Planners of Nigeria (AWTPN), in partnership with the Greater Nigeria Initiative, has said that nationwide planting of trees will help to combat the menace of climate change, ill-health and encourage protection of the environment.
Speaking Thursday in Abuja, at the pioneer tree planting campaign of AWTPN, the National Chairman, Tpl Mrs Rekiyat Ahuoiza Fache, said every tree planted represents hope, growth, longevity, renewal and protection of the environment.
She said: “It is a pivotal moment in our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and urban sustainability. I am proud of the collaborative spirit that has brought us together. Trees are not just a vital component of our urban landscape, they mitigate climate change, improve air quality and enhance our overall quality of life. By planting trees together, we are investing in the health and wellbeing of our communities for generations to come.
“This campaign is a testament to the power of partnership and collective action. It reflects the commitment of various sectors, private enterprises, public institutions, multinational corporations and government agencies all working together to achieve a common goal. Let us remember that every tree planted represents growth and renewal. It is a symbol of our dedication to creating a sustainable environment and resilient communities.
“I urge each and everyone of us to carry the spirit of collaboration forward, fostering a culture of environmental sustainability in our professional and personal lives. Let us continue to partner in building a greener and more sustainable future. The best time to plant a tree is now.”
Speaking earlier, the Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, who was represented by Head, Wildlife and Cities Management, Mrs Olukanni Bosede Catherine, said tree planting is not a solitary endeavor but a collaborative venture that requires the active participation of governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and individuals alike.
She said: “As the Honorable Minister of State for Environment, I am deeply committed to advocating for the preservation and restoration of our natural environment, and tree planting plays an indispensable role in achieving this objective.
“First, let me commend the AWTP for their consciousness in environmental protection which has given rise to this event that we are witnessing today. Trees are not merely silent spectators of our planet’s story; they are the unsung heroes of our ecosystems working tirelessly to purify the air we breathe, stabilise our climate, and provide habitat for countless species of flora and fauna. Yet, we are witnessing a staggering decline in tree cover due to deforestation, urbanization, and climate change.
“Today, however, I stand before you not to dwell on the challenge we faced, but to celebrate the power of collective action and the transformative potential of tree-planting initiatives. From reforestation projects in devastated landscapes to urban greening efforts in bustling metropolises, individuals and communities around the globe are coming together to plant the seeds of change.
“But let us not underestimate the significance of our actions. Each sapling we plant represents a tangible investment in the future of our planet- a small act of kindness with far-reaching implications. It is a gesture of hope, a declaration of our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the precious gift of nature for generations to come.
“As we embark on this journey of tree planting, let us remember that our efforts extend far beyond the mere act of putting saplings into the ground. It is incumbent upon us to nurture these fledgling trees, to protect them from harm, and to create an environment where they can thrive and flourish.
“Moreover, let us recognise that tree planting is not a solitary endeavor but a collaborative venture that requires the active participation of governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and individuals alike. By joining forces and pooling our resources, we can magnify the impact of our actions and create a greener, more sustainable world for all.
“In conclusion, I urge every one of you to heed the call of the trees – to roll up your sleeves, dig deep, and plant the seeds of change in your communities. Together, let us write a new chapter in the history of our planet – a chapter marked by reforestation, regeneration, and resilience.”
