President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security agenda has received an academic boost with the commissioning of the CG Musa Security Management Hub at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Centre of Excellence in Security Management, University of Ibadan, by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd).
The facility is expected to strengthen the connection between academic research and practical security operations by providing a platform for strategic dialogue, intelligence analysis, professional development and innovative approaches to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Ibadan, Oyo State, the Defence Minister called for stronger collaboration between universities and security agencies, stressing that sustainable national security required more than military force.
According to an official statement signed by Leah Katung-Babatunde, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Defence, Musa said the Federal Government, under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, remained committed to strengthening national security through institutional reforms, enhanced operational capabilities, strategic partnerships and evidence-based analysis.
Reflecting on the origin of the project during his lecture on global fragility and security management at the university in July 2025, the Minister described the hub as an important platform for generating intellectual solutions to security challenges.
“The battlefield may reveal the immediate manifestations of insecurity, but the university provides the intellectual environment to interrogate its causes, evaluate responses, and develop sustainable solutions,” he said.
Musa, drawing from his decades of military experience, emphasised the importance of identifying and addressing security threats before they escalate into full-blown crises.
He also disclosed that the military had intensified its operational efforts and was gradually improving the security situation, while urging Nigerians to complement government initiatives through active participation in a whole-of-nation approach to security.
“We have stepped up our game in the field and are gradually improving the security situation. However, it is essential that every citizen plays a role through a whole-of-nation approach. As the saying goes, ‘if you see something, say something’,” he stated.
The Defence Minister expressed optimism that the newly commissioned hub would develop into a premier centre for rigorous research, strategic engagement and practical innovation in security management.
He urged the university management to promote collaborative programmes involving academics, military professionals, law enforcement agencies, policymakers and technology experts, particularly in intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, conflict prevention, crisis management and community engagement.
The Minister commended Professor B.A. Aluko, Professor Ayo Albert, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, personnel of the 2 Division Engineers and various university departments for their contributions to the successful completion of the project.
He also congratulated the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor K.O. Adebowale, on the successful completion of his tenure, assuring the institution of his continued support towards advancing academic excellence and developing solutions to national security challenges.
Earlier, Adebowale expressed appreciation to the Minister for honouring the university’s request and delivering the project within the promised timeframe.
