Former Vice-President of Sierra Leone, Samuel Sam-Sumana, has commended Nigerian troops for their sacrifices in restoring peace and stability in his country, while urging journalists to hold African leaders accountable through responsible and constructive reporting.

Sam-Sumana gave the commendation during a courtesy visit by members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN), where he reflected on Nigeria’s contribution to peacekeeping efforts in Sierra Leone and the importance of an independent and responsible media in strengthening democratic governance.

According to a statement signed by DECAN President, Mr Odita Sunday, Sam-Sumana expressed gratitude to Nigeria and other countries that supported Sierra Leone during its civil war, noting that their intervention played a significant role in helping the country regain peace and stability.

“As a Sierra Leonean, I wish to express my profound gratitude for the role Nigeria and other countries played in helping Sierra Leone regain peace and stability,” he said.

He stressed the importance of Nigeria to the stability of the West African subregion, observing that developments in the country often have consequences for neighbouring states.

“When Nigeria catches a cold, the rest of us sneeze,” Sam-Sumana stated.

The former vice-president also called on journalists to uphold their responsibility of scrutinising public institutions and ensuring that political leaders remain accountable to the people.

“Constructive criticism is essential to improving public institutions and ensuring that those entrusted with public responsibilities remain accountable,” he said.

He noted that the media plays a vital role in strengthening governance by drawing attention to issues of public concern, adding that criticism should be guided by facts, professionalism and the public interest.

Reflecting on Sierra Leone’s civil war, Sam-Sumana urged African countries to learn from the painful experiences of past conflicts and sustain their commitment to peace and regional cooperation.

“We must never forget those experiences. Rather, we should use them to strengthen our collective commitment to peace and prevent similar tragedies in the subregion,” he said.

He further advocated greater African participation in international decision-making, particularly on issues affecting the continent’s security, development and future.

“Africa must be present at the tables where decisions about its future are made,” he added.

On economic development, Sam-Sumana emphasised the need for African countries to pursue industrialisation, add value to their natural resources and reduce excessive dependence on foreign assistance. He maintained that economic independence would require deliberate policies that promote local production, job creation and sustainable development.

The visit also provided an opportunity for discussions on the role of defence correspondents in reporting security matters and strengthening public understanding of military operations and national security issues.

During the engagement, veteran defence correspondents Kingsley Omonobi and Molly Kilete recalled their experiences covering conflicts in the subregion, underscoring the challenges journalists face in reporting security developments and the importance of accurate information during periods of instability.

DECAN President, Odita Sunday, highlighted the significance of the engagement in strengthening professional relationships and promoting informed reporting on defence, security and regional stability.

The association’s visit underscored the enduring historical ties between Nigeria and Sierra Leone, as well as the continuing role of journalism in promoting accountability, peace and good governance across Africa.
