The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has mourned the death of its former Director General, Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa, hailing his enduring contributions to the development and administration of the Scheme.
According to an official statement signed by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, stated this during a condolence visit to the late Obasa’s residence in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Nafiu described the late Colonel Obasa as a pioneer manager and one of the founding fathers of the NYSC, noting that he laid the foundation for a strong administrative structure that has sustained the Scheme over the years.
He said Obasa’s tenure as the third Chief Executive of the NYSC, from 1979 to 1984, recorded tremendous achievements and contributed significantly to the growth of the organisation.
The NYSC Director General said the late former Director General’s death was a loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire NYSC family, which would continue to cherish his contributions and memories.
Nafiu also acknowledged the personal encouragement and support he received from the deceased while he was alive, describing his impact as one that would continue to be remembered.
He assured the family that the NYSC would continue to build on the solid foundation laid by its founding fathers and sustain efforts to strengthen the Scheme.
“I convey the condolences of the entire NYSC family to the Obasa family,” Nafiu said.
Responding on behalf of the family, Victor Obasa expressed appreciation to the NYSC management for the condolence visit, describing his father’s death as shocking.
He, however, said the family remained grateful to God for the life of the late Colonel Obasa and the enduring legacy he left behind.
“We are overwhelmed, and our family says thank you, NYSC, for the honour you gave our dad. We are very grateful to you for not forgetting him,” he said.
