The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has inaugurated an Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Kaduna State, as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and promote integrity in the aviation sector.
The inauguration, held at the institution, was described as a significant step towards strengthening internal mechanisms for preventing corrupt practices and promoting ethical standards within Nigeria’s premier aviation training institution.
Representing the ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu SAN, the Assistant Commissioner and Head of the System Study and Review Department (SSRD), Kaduna State Office, Mr Habib Muhammad Kwalam, commended the management of NCAT for supporting the establishment of the unit.
Kwalam charged the newly inaugurated ACTU members to discharge their responsibilities with dedication, impartiality and integrity, urging them to lead by example and uphold the highest ethical standards within the college.
He warned that corruption remained a major obstacle to national development, stressing that corrupt practices could weaken institutional effectiveness, damage public confidence and undermine organisational growth.
“Corruption remains a formidable impediment to national development,” Kwalam said, urging the ACTU members to remain vigilant and proactively identify practices capable of creating an environment conducive to corruption.
He further called for sustained anti-corruption sensitisation within the college, stressing that students should also be actively involved in efforts to promote integrity and ethical conduct.
According to him, building a strong anti-corruption culture requires continuous awareness and the participation of all members of the institutional community.
Responding on behalf of the Rector, the Deputy Rector of Administration, Dr John Ali, assured the ICPC of the college’s commitment to supporting the new unit and collaborating with the Commission to strengthen accountability and good governance.
Dr Ali said the establishment of the ACTU would reinforce the college’s internal mechanisms for preventing corrupt practices and ensuring compliance with established rules and ethical standards.
He assured the unit of the management’s full support to enable it effectively discharge its mandate.
The Head of Legal, ICPC Kaduna State Office, Dr Agada Akogwu, subsequently administered the oath of office to the newly appointed ACTU members.
The oath formally committed the members to the principles of confidentiality, integrity, impartiality and dedication in carrying out their responsibilities.
In his vote of thanks, the newly appointed Chairman of the ACTU, Mr Kolawale Rafi’u, appreciated the ICPC for establishing the unit and expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in its members.
Rafi’u pledged that the unit would work closely with the ICPC and NCAT management to strengthen the fight against corruption and promote transparency and accountability across the institution.
The inauguration marks another step in the ICPC’s efforts to strengthen preventive anti-corruption mechanisms in public institutions and promote a culture of integrity across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
