The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has led an inter-agency push to strengthen Nigeria’s early warning systems as stakeholders intensify preparations for the official launch of the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Initiative in the country.

The initiative received renewed momentum on Friday, August 21, 2026, when NiMet hosted an Inter-Agency Meeting aimed at reviewing preparations for the national launch and strengthening collaboration among institutions responsible for weather forecasting, disaster management, hydrology, telecommunications, space technology and disaster risk reduction.

The meeting was chaired by the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, with the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, in attendance.

The Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, participated virtually, while the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed; the Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju; and representatives of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) also participated in the meeting.

According to the meeting, the Local Organising Committee presented an update on preparations for the national launch, highlighting progress recorded through inter-agency engagements, milestones achieved and priority actions requiring attention ahead of the launch.

The Inter-Agency Technical Committee also presented the Nigeria EW4All Implementation Roadmap 2026–2029, outlining the strategic framework and priority actions for coordinated implementation of the initiative.

The roadmap is expected to provide a structured approach for strengthening the country’s capacity to anticipate, monitor and communicate information on multiple hazards, enabling communities and relevant authorities to take timely action to reduce the impact of disasters.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for participating institutions to reinforce coordination and identify areas for sustained collaboration in delivering effective and people-centred early warning services.

NiMet and its partner institutions reaffirmed their commitment to advancing multi-hazard early warning systems, improving disaster preparedness and building climate resilience across Nigeria.

The renewed inter-agency collaboration is expected to support efforts to ensure that early warning information reaches vulnerable populations in a timely and accessible manner, ultimately contributing to the protection of lives, livelihoods and communities from weather- and climate-related hazards.
