The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has significantly expanded its operational footprint in Nigeria’s South-East with the establishment of its first permanent presence in Abia State following the handover of strategic facilities and 120 hectares of land by the state government.

The development marks a major boost to the Air Force’s regional operations and is expected to strengthen security responses across the South-East while deepening collaboration between the military and the Abia State Government.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the development as a historic milestone for the Nigerian Air Force and commended Governor Alex Chioma Otti for his commitment to strengthening security as a catalyst for sustainable development.

The event was attended by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General O.A. Ihejirika (Rtd), and other senior government and military officials.

The facilities handed over include a modern office complex, several residential accommodation blocks and the Certificate of Occupancy for 120 hectares of land at Nsulu, providing the Air Force with a permanent operational base in the state.

Air Marshal Aneke said the acquisition would enhance the NAF’s operational effectiveness in the South-East and support efforts to address emerging security threats across the region. He noted that the expansive land also offers the potential for specialised military training, revealing that the Air Force would explore the establishment of a military training institution in Abia State, subject to the necessary approvals.

Governor Otti said his administration considers security a prerequisite for investment, economic growth and the welfare of citizens, expressing confidence that the Air Force’s permanent presence would reinforce peace, improve public confidence and create a more secure environment for development.

The Chief of the Air Staff described the initiative as a strong example of productive civil-military partnership and assured the Abia State Government that the Nigerian Air Force would uphold the trust placed in it through professionalism, discipline and responsible stewardship.

With the establishment of its permanent base in Abia, the Nigerian Air Force is expected to improve its operational reach and rapid response capability across the South-East, further strengthening national security and supporting ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.
