President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described Nigeria’s First Military Head of State, the late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, as a symbol of patriotism, courage, discipline and unwavering commitment to national unity.
According to an official statement signed by Leah Katung-Babatunde, Special Assistant (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Defence, the President’s tribute was delivered by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) during the 60th Memorial Celebration held in Umuahia, Abia State, on July 29, 2026, to commemorate the late military leader six decades after his death.
Speaking on behalf of the President, the Defence Minister said General Aguiyi-Ironsi distinguished himself throughout his military career with loyalty, professionalism and an unflinching commitment to duty, rising through the ranks to become the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army before assuming office as Nigeria’s first Military Head of State during one of the country’s most challenging periods.
The President noted that although Aguiyi-Ironsi’s tenure was brief, he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to preserving Nigeria’s unity, restoring stability and protecting the integrity of the nation.
“He understood that leadership demands sacrifice, placing the interest of the nation above personal considerations,” the President stated through the Defence Minister.
President Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding Nigeria’s unity, stressing that the values exemplified by the late General remain indispensable to nation-building.
He said the Federal Government remained committed to preserving the country’s unity while strengthening institutions that protect democracy, adding that Nigeria’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths and that mutual respect, justice, tolerance and a shared national purpose are essential to achieving lasting peace and prosperity.
The President further conveyed the nation’s gratitude and sympathy to the family of the late General, while commending the organisers of the memorial for sustaining the culture of honouring national heroes. He said preserving the memories of distinguished leaders reinforces the values that continue to shape the country’s future.
The memorial service concluded with prayers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and the continued peace, unity and prosperity of the nation.
Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, also paid tribute to the late military leader, describing him as a patriotic officer who led Nigeria during one of the most turbulent periods in its history.
Obasanjo said Aguiyi-Ironsi’s memory serves as a reminder that Nigeria’s unity came at great cost and urged present and future generations to protect the peace, cohesion and institutional integrity of the Armed Forces.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, who hosted the event, thanked the Federal Government, military leadership and other dignitaries for gathering in Umuahia to honour one of the state’s most distinguished sons.
The governor said Abia remains proud of Aguiyi-Ironsi’s courage and ultimate sacrifice for national unity, adding that his legacy continues to inspire his administration’s commitment to good governance, justice and national cohesion.
Among the dignitaries at the memorial were former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika, serving and retired military officers, lawmakers and traditional rulers.
