The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claims to be the Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), following the execution of a bench warrant issued against him.
Confirming the development on Tuesday evening, the Personal Assistant to the Force Public Relations Officer, ASP Aminu Koji, told journalists that operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) arrested Adeyemi in Osun State.
“We have just confirmed the arrest of Mr. Adeniyi Adeyemi by a team of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Osun State,” Asp Koji said.
He declined to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the arrest but confirmed that Adeyemi was in police custody and would face legal proceedings in accordance with the law.
The arrest marks the beginning of investigations into the activities of the purported Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, an organisation previously disowned by the Federal Government.
Authorities are investigating allegations linked to the operations of the council, which government officials have described as unauthorised.
The Presidency had earlier distanced itself from the organisation, while anti-corruption and security agencies launched separate investigations into its activities.
The latest development follows reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate Adeyemi over the activities of the alleged council.
Adeyemi had also reportedly claimed on Monday that his life was under threat.
Further details are expected as investigations continue.
