The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned the Python Soldiers’ Club at the Headquarters, 6 Division Nigerian Army, reaffirming that the welfare of troops remains central to achieving operational effectiveness and mission success across the Nigerian Army.

According to an official statement signed by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the COAS made the declaration during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, 3 July 2026, where he stressed that fostering a healthy social life and strengthening camaraderie among soldiers are essential to building a resilient and combat-ready force.

Lieutenant General Shaibu said the initiative aligns with his “Soldier First” philosophy, which places the well-being, morale and overall welfare of personnel at the forefront of the Nigerian Army’s operational priorities.

He noted that the newly commissioned facility provides a conducive environment for soldiers to relax, interact and strengthen interpersonal relationships after prolonged periods of demanding internal security operations. According to him, welfare-focused initiatives such as the Python Soldiers’ Club play a vital role in enhancing mental well-being, resilience and unit cohesion, all of which are critical to sustaining operational success.

The Army Chief further emphasized that troop welfare extends beyond the provision of accommodation and operational equipment, stressing that recreational infrastructure is equally important in promoting a balanced and healthy lifestyle for personnel.

“A motivated and psychologically fit force is better equipped to respond decisively to evolving security challenges and to safeguard the nation’s peace and stability,” he stated.

The statement added that the commissioning of the Python Soldiers’ Club underscores the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to prioritising the welfare of its personnel while strengthening institutional capacity. It also reflects the COAS’ strategic vision of building a professional, united and highly motivated force capable of effectively discharging its constitutional mandate through enhanced morale and operational excellence.
