The Ekiti State Police Command has commenced full enforcement of the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, prohibiting the use of vehicles without registration number plates or with deliberately obscured number plates on public roads, leading to the arraignment of 17 motorists for violating the law.
According to an official statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Police Command, SP Sunday Abutu, the statewide enforcement exercise, which commenced on June 22, 2026, is part of the strategic initiatives of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen internal security, enhance crime prevention, improve vehicular identification, and ensure strict compliance with extant traffic laws.
The statement explained that the exercise is also aimed at preventing criminal elements from exploiting unregistered or concealed vehicles to perpetrate crimes and evade detection by law enforcement agencies.
It disclosed that during the operation, police operatives intercepted a total of 17 vehicles found to be operating without registration number plates or with deliberately covered registration numbers in contravention of the law. Following due screening and investigation, the offenders were charged before courts of competent jurisdiction for prosecution in accordance with the relevant legal provisions.
The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, said the enforcement exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to reinforce public safety and strengthen the state’s security architecture.
He stressed that properly registered vehicles with clearly visible number plates remain vital tools for intelligence gathering, crime investigation, and the prompt identification and tracing of vehicles used in the commission of criminal offences.
The Commissioner urged all vehicle owners and motorists to ensure their vehicles are duly registered and fitted with valid, clearly visible registration number plates at all times. He also called on members of the public to comply with all extant traffic regulations and cooperate with police officers in the lawful discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
The statement reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through intelligence-driven, proactive, and professional policing, assuring residents that the enforcement exercise will be sustained across the state as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime, strengthen public confidence in policing, and advance the vision of the Inspector-General of Police for a safer and more secure Nigeria.
