In an era where digital technology has become the backbone of governance, economic growth and national security, Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) has emerged as one of the key institutions driving Nigeria’s digital transformation journey. Established by the Federal Government in 2006 to provide a unified and secure Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), the organisation has, over the last two decades, evolved into a critical enabler of e-governance, digital service delivery, cybersecurity and technological innovation across the country.

Today, as governments and businesses increasingly rely on digital platforms to deliver services, manage data and drive economic activities, Galaxy Backbone stands at the centre of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, providing the infrastructure that powers government operations and safeguards critical national information assets.

Against this backdrop, the organisation celebrated its 20th anniversary by showcasing its achievements in digital infrastructure development, cybersecurity resilience and support for Nigeria’s growing digital economy while outlining an ambitious vision for the future.

Speaking during a media briefing to commemorate the milestone, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, highlighted the company’s remarkable transformation from a government ICT service provider into one of the nation’s most strategic digital infrastructure institutions.

He disclosed that Galaxy Backbone currently operates approximately 5,000 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure connecting 28 state capitals across the federation, providing the digital backbone that supports government operations and facilitates the delivery of essential services nationwide.

According to Professor Adeyanju, the organisation now manages world-class Tier III and Tier IV certified data centres, cloud computing platforms and advanced cybersecurity infrastructure that host and protect critical government digital assets.

He noted that the growing sophistication of cyber threats, particularly during election periods and major national events, has heightened the need for robust digital security measures. Despite these challenges, he said Galaxy Backbone has continued to successfully defend government systems through its state-of-the-art Cybersecurity Operations Centre and strategic partnerships with relevant security agencies.

The Managing Director further revealed that the organisation is investing heavily in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing and digital innovation as part of efforts to position Nigeria for the future digital economy.

As part of this commitment, he announced plans to train 100,000 public servants on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, a programme aimed at enhancing productivity, efficiency and innovation across government institutions.

Professor Adeyanju stressed that technology remains a critical catalyst for national development, adding that Galaxy Backbone is committed to providing the infrastructure and expertise required to support Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

In his remarks, the Executive Director, Finance and Corporate Services, Mohammed Sani Ibrahim, described technology as an indispensable tool for accelerating economic growth and national development.

He called for sustained investment in digital infrastructure, noting that expanding technology access and connectivity would unlock new opportunities, improve public service delivery and strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.

According to him, Galaxy Backbone has matured into a strategic national asset, providing shared digital services, cloud solutions and technology advisory support that continue to create value for government institutions and other stakeholders.

The organisation also highlighted its expanding partnerships with government agencies, private sector organisations, startups and small and medium-scale enterprises, providing digital infrastructure, cloud services and connectivity solutions that support innovation and entrepreneurship.

As part of activities marking its 20th anniversary, Galaxy Backbone announced plans to undertake community-focused digital empowerment projects, host stakeholders at its inaugural Digital Transformation Summit and unveil a refreshed corporate identity that reflects its aspirations for the future.

Looking ahead, Professor Adeyanju expressed confidence that Galaxy Backbone is well positioned to become a leading digital transformation institution in Sub-Saharan Africa, leveraging the foundation built over the last two decades to drive innovation, strengthen governance and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth.
