By Prosper Okoye

The Young Progressive Party (YPP) has confirmed Blessing Ufedojo Benyeogor as its candidate for the 2027 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial election, setting up a contest against incumbent Senator Ireti Kingibe of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Benyeogor said her decision to contest was driven by concerns over governance gaps in the FCT, particularly in education, healthcare and infrastructure.

She said past occupants of the Senate seat had not fully acted as “the voice of the voiceless”, arguing that lawmakers should prioritise representing constituents and holding the executive accountable on basic needs.

According to her, key priorities if elected would include improving access to quality education, reducing the cost of healthcare, and addressing infrastructure deficits.

She said many residents struggle to afford medical services even in federal hospitals, adding that she would push for policies to subsidise drugs and expand access to affordable treatment, especially for women and vulnerable groups.

Benyeogor also highlighted poor drainage systems and sanitation challenges in parts of the FCT, saying these would form part of her legislative agenda if elected.

On the prospect of facing another female candidate, she expressed confidence in her chances, saying her campaign would rely on youth and women mobilisation as well as grassroots support.

Meanwhile, the FCT Chairman of the YPP, Hon. Abraham Simon Adedotun, said the party’s decision to field Benyeogor was reached through consensus after concluding its internal selection process.

He said the party had closed its nomination exercise and could not reopen the process, adding that Benyeogor had met all requirements, including the purchase and submission of nomination forms.

Adedotun said the party operates on internal discipline and collective decision-making, stressing that once a decision is taken by the leadership, it remains binding.

He said a late expression of interest by another aspirant could not alter the outcome.

Adedotun described Benyeogor as a committed party member and former state executive with a strong understanding of the challenges facing FCT residents.

He added that her candidacy reflects the party’s commitment to youth participation and women’s inclusion in politics.

Also speaking, YPP North Central women leader Hauwa Aruwan said women remain capable of holding leadership positions if given the opportunity.

She said women should no longer be underestimated in politics, adding that leadership “only requires ideas and commitment” to drive change.

Aruwan expressed support for Benyeogor’s candidacy, saying women in politics must begin to support one another while challenging long-standing perceptions about female leadership in Nigeria.
