The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has commenced its maiden nationwide party congresses, setting in motion a series of internal democratic processes ahead of its inaugural National Convention scheduled for May 9, 2026, in Abuja.
According to an official signed statement by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, the congresses began on May 1 with ward and polling unit exercises slated to run through May 2, 2026. The statement further outlined that Local Government Congresses will take place on May 4, followed by Zonal Congresses on May 6, in line with the party’s approved timetable.
The statement noted that the upcoming National Convention, described as a landmark event in the party’s evolution, will be held in Abuja and is expected to draw accredited party members, stakeholders, and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who will monitor proceedings in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
It added that the party’s Convention Planning Committee has concluded all necessary arrangements, expressing confidence in a seamless and successful event. Security agencies have also been duly notified to provide adequate protection for delegates, party officials, and invited guests throughout the exercise.
The NDC leadership emphasized that party officials at both state and national levels have been tasked with strict adherence to established guidelines and timelines to ensure the credibility and smooth conduct of the congresses across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
The statement further assured that comprehensive logistical frameworks have been put in place to support the nationwide exercises, including the deployment of materials and coordination of personnel, with the aim of delivering a transparent, orderly, and hitch-free process.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy and institutional development, expressing optimism that the congresses and forthcoming convention will consolidate its structures and position it strongly within Nigeria’s political landscape.
