The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s International Workers’ Day, reaffirming the critical role of Nigerian workers in driving national growth and development.
According to an official signed statement by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government while congratulating workers across the country on the occasion.
The Minister commended Nigerian workers for their resilience, diligence, and unwavering commitment to national service, noting that their contributions remain fundamental to the country’s economic advancement and overall prosperity. He emphasised that the productivity and dedication of the workforce are indispensable to achieving sustainable development goals.
Tunji-Ojo further urged workers to continue to embrace patriotism, professionalism, and a strong work ethic, stressing that these values are essential for strengthening national institutions and fostering long-term economic stability.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of workers while creating an enabling environment for economic growth and job creation.
While extending best wishes to workers on the celebration, the Minister called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding, urging citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity, collective responsibility, and hard work in nation-building.
The declaration aligns with Nigeria’s annual observance of Workers’ Day, a globally recognised event dedicated to honouring the contributions of workers and the labour movement.
