The Nigerian Army has showcased the combat readiness and professional training standards of its troops as the 2026 Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition organised by the 8 Division Nigerian Army concluded in grand style at the Giginya Military Cantonment in Sokoto.
The four-day competition, held from April 13 to April 16, 2026, climaxed with a colourful closing ceremony at the Division Training School Obstacle Ground, where participating formations demonstrated a wide range of tactical and physical skills.
According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the competition was designed to test the physical fitness, tactical proficiency and overall combat readiness of junior soldiers within the division.
Over the course of the exercise, troops engaged in rigorous drills and competitive military activities including drill exercises, map reading, combat swimming, skills-at-arms and obstacle crossing, all aimed at sharpening the operational effectiveness of the soldiers.
Formations that took part in the competition included 1 Brigade, 17 Brigade, 8 Division Garrison, 48 Engineer Brigade and 58 Signal Brigade, all drawn from the Division’s Area of Responsibility.
In his closing remarks, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 Joint Task Force (Northwest), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Bemgba Paul Koughna, commended the participants for their dedication and commitment throughout the exercise, describing training as the bedrock of military professionalism.
He stressed that soldiers, particularly those at the junior level, must recognise training as the core of military service, noting that personnel often spend more time training than engaging in actual combat operations.
“Continuous training ensures that soldiers are always prepared to overcome any adversary. A significant part of a soldier’s career is devoted to preparation, and every aspect of training must therefore be taken seriously,” the GOC stated.
Major General Koughna congratulated all participants, especially those who distinguished themselves during the competition, as well as the formations that emerged as winners and runners-up. He also encouraged units to consolidate on their performances ahead of the next edition of the competition.
At the end of the keenly contested exercise, 8 Division Garrison emerged as the overall winner with 590 points, while 1 Brigade finished second with 490 points. The 58 Signal Brigade secured the third position with 460 points.
The closing ceremony attracted representatives from various security and paramilitary agencies. Highlights of the event included obstacle crossing demonstrations by troops, the presentation of medals and trophies to outstanding formations and soldiers, as well as group photographs to commemorate the occasion.
