Senator Seriake Dickson has called for urgent measures to boost women’s participation in politics and governance, describing affirmative action for women as essential for Nigeria’s development.

Speaking during a meeting with women leaders and civil society advocates led by Nkoyo Toyo, Senator Dickson emphasised that women must move from the sidelines into leadership positions across all levels of society.

The lawmaker highlighted the persistent underrepresentation of women in political offices and stressed that legal, policy, and party mechanisms are critical to correcting this imbalance. He noted that every man is connected to women through family and society, saying, “No man is not a product of a woman,” and underscored the need for women to have a strong voice in decision-making processes.

According to Senator Dickson, economic barriers, lack of control within political party structures, and limited access to resources have hindered women from contesting elections effectively. He revealed that his party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), is deliberately creating spaces for women to take up leadership roles, including chairpersons, deputy chairpersons, and other key positions at state and national levels.

The senator further urged women’s organisations to engage in grassroots political education, ensuring women across the country are aware of their civic responsibilities and empowered to participate actively in governance.

Reaffirming his commitment to legislative reforms, Senator Dickson called for mechanisms such as reserved seats and affirmative action policies to guarantee women’s representation in political decision-making.

He concluded by commending the women advocates for their dedication and assured them of continued collaboration with the NDC to advance women’s inclusion, leadership development, mentorship, and empowerment in Nigeria’s democratic process.
