By Nkechi Eze

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reinforced its commitment to expanding defence cooperation with Germany, focusing on training, technology transfer, and operational capacity enhancement. This was highlighted by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, during a courtesy visit by Mr. Johannes Lehne, Deputy Ambassador of Germany to Nigeria, accompanied by Defence Adviser Colonel Boris Bovekemp and Lieutenant Colonel Holger Bernard, Leader of the German Technical Advisory Group, to Headquarters NAF.

Air Marshal Aneke described the engagement as a critical step in consolidating the longstanding and mutually beneficial partnership between Nigeria and Germany in the defence sector. He commended Germany for its continuous support through specialised training, technical assistance, and professional military engagement, noting that these collaborations have significantly strengthened the NAF’s operational readiness and institutional capacity.

Reiterating his command philosophy, the CAS highlighted the Nigerian Air Force’s focus on building a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower in synergy with other security agencies. He stressed key priorities including personnel welfare, platform modernisation, intelligence-driven operations, predictive maintenance, and the adoption of emerging technologies to enhance operational effectiveness.

In response, Deputy Ambassador Lehne expressed appreciation for the enduring partnership with the Nigerian Air Force, affirming Germany’s commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen capacity, professionalism, and technological advancement within the Service. He emphasised that continued collaboration in training and technical development would contribute not only to Nigeria’s defence capabilities but also to regional stability.

The CAS assured that the visit would pave the way for deeper bilateral defence relations, creating new avenues for strategic cooperation, while expressing gratitude to the German delegation for their ongoing support and engagement.

The meeting underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s proactive approach in leveraging international partnerships to drive institutional growth, technological advancement, and operational excellence.
