In a renewed display of inter-agency collaboration and operational vigilance, the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry has achieved another significant success in its sustained campaign against smuggling and other illegal activities along Nigeria’s maritime and border corridors.
On Friday, October 3, 2025, the Base formally handed over 419 bags of seized foreign parboiled rice to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, in strict compliance with extant regulations and the Harmonized Standard Operating Procedure (HSOP) guiding inter-agency cooperation among security and law enforcement bodies.
In an official statement, the Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base Badagry, Navy Captain B. O. Omotayo, disclosed that the contraband items were intercepted at different points along the Badagry–Porto Novo Creek and adjoining backwaters. He explained that the seizures followed intensified surveillance and proactive patrols carried out by the Base’s Quick Response Teams, who have continued to dominate the waterways through intelligence-led operations and rapid response engagements.
Captain Omotayo noted that the operations were part of the Navy’s ongoing efforts to curtail the activities of economic saboteurs and cross-border smugglers who persistently exploit Nigeria’s maritime environment for unlawful trade. “These seizures reaffirm the Navy’s resolve to secure our maritime domain and protect the nation’s economic lifelines against those who seek to undermine them,” he said.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony, the Commanding Officer, represented by the Base Administration Officer, Lieutenant Commander S. O. Talabi, emphasized the Nigerian Navy’s unyielding commitment to enforcing Federal Government policies on maritime security and economic protection. He reiterated that all naval operations are guided by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla’s Strategic Directive 06–2023, which underscores the importance of securing Nigeria’s maritime environment as a catalyst for sustainable socio-economic growth.
Captain Omotayo further commended the professionalism, vigilance, and resilience of officers and men of the Forward Operating Base Badagry for their continued success in frustrating the activities of smugglers and other maritime offenders. He assured that the Base will continue to leverage intelligence-driven operations while deepening collaboration with sister security agencies and host communities within the Badagry axis.
He also issued a stern warning to criminal elements engaged in smuggling and other illicit maritime activities to desist forthwith, stressing that the Nigerian Navy under the leadership of Vice Admiral Ogalla remains resolute in its mission to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity and economic sovereignty.
“The Nigerian Navy will not relent in ensuring that all illegal activities on our waters are decisively checked. We will continue to secure our maritime borders, protect legitimate trade, and deny criminals the freedom to operate,” he declared.
The Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base Badagry has in recent months intensified patrols along critical waterways linking Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, strengthening its maritime security presence in response to evolving threats in the region. The latest seizure once again highlights the Navy’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s economic protection agenda and ensuring that the nation’s maritime corridors remain safe, secure, and profitable for lawful trade.
