The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, has commended the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) for its unwavering commitment to advancing women’s empowerment, skill acquisition, and community resilience, describing the association as a vital partner in strengthening families and societies.
Ms. Mohammed gave the commendation on Monday, 25th August 2025, during a courtesy visit to the DEPOWA Secretariat in Abuja, where she was warmly received by the President of the association, Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa. The engagement, which focused on deepening collaboration in the areas of women’s empowerment, sustainable development, and inclusive growth, highlighted the shared vision between the UN and DEPOWA in driving progress and resilience at both community and national levels.
As part of her visit, the UN Deputy Secretary-General toured the DEPOWA Skill Acquisition Centre, where she interacted with students undergoing training in various trades. Expressing admiration for the centre’s initiatives, she noted that the programs not only equip women with practical skills but also provide crucial support systems for families, while fostering resilience within communities. Addressing the trainees, Ms. Mohammed described the centre as a powerful platform for uplifting families and building a stronger society, adding that empowering women through skills development creates lasting impact that transcends generations.
In her remarks, DEPOWA President Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa described the engagement as a moment of “deep alignment” with the United Nations, stressing that the association’s vision strongly resonates with global goals of inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainable impact. She reaffirmed DEPOWA’s resolve to continue investing in programs that bring hope, create opportunities, and inspire transformation in the lives of women and families.
The visit further underscored the growing partnership between the United Nations and DEPOWA, reflecting a shared determination to promote inclusion, progress, and sustainable development.
