The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, on Thursday received the Minister of State for Works, Alhaji Bello Muhammed Goronyo, at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja for a briefing on ongoing rescue operations following last Sunday’s boat tragedy in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The meeting also reviewed wider flood-related challenges currently affecting communities in the state.

Mrs. Umar assured the Minister that rescue efforts in the aftermath of the boat mishap would be sustained and further intensified, stressing NEMA’s continuing commitment to ensuring timely, coordinated and efficient disaster response across the country. She noted that the Agency was working closely with state and local authorities, as well as local divers, to account for all missing persons.

She further reaffirmed the Agency’s readiness to respond to increasing flood risks during the current rainy season, adding that disaster preparedness and early response remained a top priority for NEMA.

In his remarks, Alhaji Bello Muhammed Goronyo commended NEMA’s prompt intervention following the boat accident and its efforts in responding to other disaster incidents nationwide. He urged the Agency to sustain its momentum and build on the progress already made in strengthening Nigeria’s disaster management system.

The visit underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to coordinated disaster response and inter-agency collaboration in mitigating the impact of emergencies on affected communities.
