In a strategic move to enhance Nigeria’s national security architecture, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen inter-agency collaboration through the deployment of indigenous satellite technology. The renewed partnership was formalised during a courtesy visit by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen, to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, 7 August 2025.

The meeting, which focused on strengthening operational synergy between the two agencies, explored avenues to leverage NIGCOMSAT’s space-based capabilities in enhancing the NAF’s operational efficiency, particularly in the domains of secure communications, real-time intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

According to an official statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the collaboration reflects the evolving nature of modern warfare and the increasing strategic value of space technologies in defending national sovereignty and ensuring sustainable security operations.

Speaking during the visit, Air Marshal Abubakar emphasised the need for the NAF to adopt home-grown technological solutions in addressing the Force’s expanding operational requirements. “We must continually seek innovative ways to improve our capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign systems. Strategic collaboration with institutions like NIGCOMSAT is essential to ensure secure communication and real-time situational awareness across our theatres of operation,” he stated.

In her remarks, the NIGCOMSAT boss praised the Air Force for its proactive approach to technological advancement and expressed her agency’s full commitment to supporting the NAF with mission-specific satellite services. “This partnership is not only timely but critical in strengthening Nigeria’s digital defence infrastructure. NIGCOMSAT stands ready to deploy its expertise in support of the Nigerian Air Force and contribute meaningfully to national security,” Mrs Egerton-Idehen said.

The engagement underscores a shared vision by both agencies to harness indigenous satellite infrastructure in building a more secure, self-reliant, and digitally fortified defence ecosystem. It also signals a broader push by the Nigerian government to integrate space-based solutions into national security planning and operations.
