NEMA Swiftly Responds to Flash Floods in Maiduguri and Jere LGAs, Assures Continued Surveillance

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a swift and coordinated response to flash floods that struck parts of Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Areas in Borno State on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, following hours of intense early morning rainfall.

The agency, acting through its Maiduguri Operations Office, promptly activated its emergency response protocol and deployed rescue teams in collaboration with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BOSEMA), the Federal Fire Service, the Nigerian Police, the State Fire Service, and other key stakeholders to provide critical support to affected residents and mitigate the impact of the sudden flooding.

The heavy downpour, which triggered flash floods across several low-lying and densely populated areas, was made worse by longstanding challenges such as inadequate drainage systems and the obstruction of natural waterways due to unregulated urban development.

Among the most severely affected communities were Bolori particularly the section behind the gas plants, where over 20 households were inundated along with the Ibrahim Taiwo Police Station axis on Baga Road, Bulumkutu Kasuwa, where most residential buildings were submerged, Bulumkutu Abuja, and parts of Damboa Road.

Rescue personnel were swiftly dispatched to these areas, providing immediate relief and safety assessments. As of midday, rapid response teams reported that floodwaters had begun to recede significantly across the impacted neighbourhoods, allowing normalcy to gradually return in most locations.

Despite the reduction in water levels, NEMA emphasized the need for continued vigilance, especially in light of persistent rainfall patterns in the region. The agency, along with its partners, has intensified surveillance and early warning systems to ensure a timely response to any further weather-induced emergencies.

A senior NEMA official noted that the current situation underscores the urgent need for improved urban planning and sustained investment in climate-resilient infrastructure, especially in flood-prone regions such as the North-East.

The agency reiterated its commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and community resilience, assuring residents that all relevant emergency response frameworks remain on high alert.

As part of its broader risk reduction strategy, NEMA also called on residents to desist from constructing structures along natural watercourses and to adhere to environmental guidelines issued by local authorities to prevent future disasters.
