Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested twenty-four undergraduate students of Bayero University Kano (BUK) for their alleged involvement in internet-related fraud, identity theft, and financial scams.

The suspects were apprehended in a sting operation carried out by the Kano Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on Monday, July 21, 2025, opposite the BUK New Site. According to an official statement issued by the Commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the arrests followed weeks of discreet surveillance based on actionable intelligence.

Oyewale disclosed that the EFCC operatives swooped in on the suspects after gathering substantial evidence linking them to cybercrime activities. Items recovered during the operation included mobile phones, laptops, internet routers, and a Honda Accord vehicle, all believed to be tools used in perpetrating the alleged crimes.

Those arrested include Ismaíl Nura, Suuleyman Ayeh, Usman Abdulrazaq, Emmanuel Chigozie, Akabe Seth, Daniel Imoter, Abdulganiyu Jimoh, Jafar Abubakar, Usman Nuraddeen, Mohammad Adnan, Abubakar Abusufyan, Abdulmalik Ibrahim, Abubakar Sadiq, Daniel Masamu, Abdulrasheed Abdulsamad, Issac Dosunu, Nuraddeen Ogunbiyi, Onyeyemi Kaleem, Miracle Joseph, Danjuma Musa, Ibrahim Mubaraq, Yusuf Salihu, Lawal Ibrahim Edebo, Abdulmajeed Suleiman, and Dauda Abdulhamid.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were operating individually and in groups, using fraudulent identities and deceptive online tactics to scam unsuspecting victims locally and internationally.

“The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” Oyewale confirmed, noting that the Commission remains committed to tracking and prosecuting individuals involved in cybercrime and other forms of financial malfeasance.

The EFCC urged students and young people across the country to shun internet fraud and other criminal activities, stressing that the law will catch up with anyone who uses technology to exploit others.
