By Nkechi Eze

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Mr. Tunji Bello, has called on traders in Kano State to promote fairness, integrity, and consumer protection in their commercial activities, especially within the city’s prominent markets.

Bello made this charge during his visit to the Dawanau Grains Market in Kano, as part of the Commission’s ongoing consumer education and market sensitisation drive across the country.

“Kano is home to some of Nigeria’s most dynamic and influential markets, from Kurmi to Kantin Kwari to Dawanau,” he said, noting the state’s historic role in driving Nigeria’s commercial activities, especially in Northern Nigeria.

He urged traders to collectively uphold ethical business practices that foster trust between buyers and sellers. “Let us work together to make these markets models of integrity,” he said. “Where honesty is rewarded. Where fake products are chased out. Where both traders and consumers feel protected.”

The FCCPC boss emphasised the importance of consumer confidence in sustaining business growth, adding that markets must be environments where safety, authenticity, and fairness are guaranteed. He said the Commission remains committed to ensuring that Nigerian markets operate in accordance with global best practices, where competition thrives and both consumers and businesses benefit.

“Because when markets are fair and competitive, everyone wins, the buyer, the seller, and the economy,” Bello declared.

His visit to the Dawanau Grains Market, one of the largest grains markets in West Africa, underscores the Commission’s efforts to strengthen market compliance, encourage transparency in pricing, eliminate the circulation of fake or substandard products, and protect the interests of both consumers and genuine businesses.

Mr. Bello also engaged with local market leaders and stakeholders, assuring them of the Commission’s willingness to work collaboratively in addressing challenges around market regulation and consumer rights enforcement.
