The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has expressed strong appreciation for the gallantry and dedication of troops serving under Operation FASAN YAMA in Nigeria’s Northwest, urging them to remain alert and deepen their engagement with local communities.

Represented by Rear Admiral Olusanya Abiodun Bankole during a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) engagement at the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Giginya Barracks, Sokoto, the CDS warned the troops against letting down their guard.

“You must remain vigilant. The fight you’re engaged in is righteous, and the adversary is relentless. Do not fall asleep because your enemies are not sleeping,” Bankole cautioned on behalf of General Musa.

General Musa also praised the consistent performance and operational successes of the 8 Division. “Your reports continue to reflect excellence. The CDS asked me to commend your General Officer Commanding and every officer under Operation FASAN YAMA for their unwavering commitment,” he said.

Underscoring the importance of synergy between the Armed Forces and civilian populations, General Musa emphasized that trust and cooperation with local communities are vital to achieving lasting peace.

“The best intelligence comes from the civilians you protect. Let them run to you, not away from you,” Bankole advised.

In his response, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division, acknowledged the significance of the CDS’s message, describing it as a reaffirmation of their people-centered approach.

“Our operations are guided not just by tactical objectives, but by the need to win the hearts and minds of the people we serve,” Ajose said.

The engagement also featured lectures focused on human rights, gender-based violence, and military ethics key components of ongoing efforts to instill professionalism and discipline across the ranks.

General Ajose reminded troops of the moral responsibility they carry: “We are here to protect the vulnerable. This means operating with empathy, justice, and unshakable discipline.”

Rear Admiral Bankole concluded the visit with heartfelt words for the personnel and their families.

“You are not just soldiers, you’re you are sons, brothers, and parents. We pray that each of you returns home safely,” he said. “Nigeria is one. The bandits will not prevail. Our Armed Forces will remain resolute.”

As part of the visit, plans were announced for medical outreaches, sports activities, and strategic media engagements to further strengthen ties between the military and local communities.
