…warns of legal action, more demolitions of cult-linked properties

In a bold escalation of its anti-cultism campaign, the Edo State Government has announced plans to initiate legal proceedings against the Neo Black Movement, popularly known as Black Axe, following recent cult-related violence and killings across the state.
In a statement made available by Mr. Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the government said it is relying on the public admission by individuals identifying themselves as leaders of the group, who openly criticized the recent demolition of a building linked to their activities. The government said their acknowledgment amounts to self-indictment and has cleared the path for legal action under the state’s anti-cultism laws.
Describing the demolished building as a known hub for coordinating violent attacks within Benin metropolis and other parts of Edo, the government said the operation was based on verified intelligence and in compliance with the Anti-Cultism Law passed by the Edo State House of Assembly.
Reacting to the group’s claim of renovating six public schools in the state since Governor Okpebholo assumed office, the state government demanded full disclosure. It urged the group to publicly name the schools, provide verifiable evidence of the renovations, and show official approval from the government warning that failure to do so would result in legal action for defamation and unauthorized interference with public infrastructure.
Governor Okpebholo has also directed that a divisional police station be constructed on the land where the demolished cult-linked structure once stood, reinforcing permanent security presence in the area.
The statement further disclosed that more buildings and properties associated with cultist activity would soon be targeted for demolition. The Okpebholo administration, it added, remains fully committed to enforcing the anti-cultism law and ridding Edo State of criminal networks operating under the guise of fraternities.
Reaffirming his administration’s zero-tolerance stance, Governor Okpebholo made it clear he has no affiliation with any cult group and will not allow Edo State to serve as a haven for such organizations.
“Anyone involved in cult-related activities is advised to cease and desist or vacate the state. Edo under my watch will be hostile ground for cultism,” the governor warned.
