The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has announced November 24-26, 2023 as the tentative date for its Triennial National Delegates Conference scheduled to hold in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja Nigeria.

A statement signed by NAWOJ National Secretary, Helen Udofa said the decision was reached on Thursday, October 19, at the Association’s online National Executive Committee, NEC, Meeting, presided over by the President of NAWOJ, Ladi Bala.

This decision, hereby pushes the date of the Delegates Conference forward by nine (9) days, from November 15, 2023, earlier earmarked to November 24-26, 2023.

The NEC in session, resolved that the Triennial National Delegates Conference should be held on the last weekend of November 2023, as Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States would be holding their Gubernatorial elections on November 11, 2023; coupled with security concerns and logistic challenges.

Following a motion moved by the Chairperson of Oyo State Chapter of NAWOJ, Jadesola Ajibola, and seconded by the Chairperson of Gombe State Chapter of NAWOJ, Bome Samutar, the new date was adopted.

The NEC in Session also deliberated on the need for the conference be held in a suitable and conducive venue at Maryam Babangida Women Development Centre, Abuja.

Consequent to the day shift of the Delegates Conference, the NEC also unanimously and legally extended the tenure of the current Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Association to forestall a vacuum in leadership.

This was a sequel to a motion moved by the Chairperson of NAWOJ Plateau State, Nene Dung, and seconded by the Chairperson of Benue State Chapter of NAWOJ, Elizabeth Achagh.

“In view of the fact that the date of the Triennial National Delegates Conference has been moved by nine (9) days from November 15th to November 24-26, 2023, as earlier agreed upon during the last NEC Meeting that was held online on September 16, 2023, I, Nene Dung, Chairperson of Plateau State Chapter of NAWOJ, hereby move a motion for the extension of the tenure of the current CWC of NAWOJ pending when the Delegates Conference shall take place and the CWC be properly dissolved in line with Article 13(1) of the NUJ Constitution,” Dung said.

The Mike Ikeogwu-led-Member Credentials Committee was also commended the for kick-starting the process for the National election of NAWOJ. It wished the National Secretariat of the Association a successful hosting of the 2023 Triennial National Delegates Conference in Abuja come November 24-26, 2023
