In a significant crackdown, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested at least 50 suspects linked to the vandalism of public infrastructure in the area. This milestone underscores the Command’s commitment to safeguarding critical public assets and maintaining law and order within the territory.
The Commissioner of Police FCT Command, Olatunji Disu made this disclosure Monday in Abuja while parading the suspected vandals.

According to Disu, the operatives successfully apprehended multiple suspects and recovered a substantial haul of stolen and vandalized items.

The recovered items include: Stolen Infrastructure: 25 manhole covers and galvanized rods used in flyover construction, Vehicles: Three vehicles were recovered, likely used in the commission of these crimes, Vandalized Equipment: Solar street lights were found, damaged and removed from their rightful locations, Tools and Exhibits: Various tools used in the vandalism of government installations and several other exhibits were seized at multiple locations in Kabusa, Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse.

“The sheer variety and volume of recovered items during the operations underscore the sophisticated and widespread nature of these criminal syndicates. Their activities have resulted in substantial damage to public infrastructure projects and services in the FCT, highlighting the severity of the issue” he said.
Highlighting further, Disu revealed that investigations exposed that these suspects are linked to a broader criminal network, with a disturbing modus operandi: they steal manhole covers and illicitly sell them to scrap metal dealers.

“This criminal activities endangers the lives of the general public by creating hazards on roads and walkways while undermining the integrity of public infrastructure.
“I want to emphasize that the FCT Police Command and our sister security agencies operate a zero-tolerance policy toward acts of vandalism and theft that undermine public infrastructure and safety.
“This achievement underscores our unwavering commitment to protecting the critical infrastructure of the Federal Capital Territory.
“We will continue to ensure that all those responsible for these criminal acts are brought to justice”. He said
The commissioner highlighted that the recent arrest of suspects involved in the theft and vandalism of manhole covers underscores the command’s commitment to tackling this issue. However, the commissioner also emphasized that vandalism poses severe risks to public safety and infrastructure, creating unsafe environments, financial burdens, and negative impacts on community morale.
The effects of vandalism are far-reaching, from damaging public infrastructure to creating health and environmental concerns. The commissioner’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing vandalism to ensure the well-being and security of communities.
