The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has taken a major step forward in disaster preparedness and response. NEMA, on December 5, 2024,  launched the Nigerian Hazard Countrywide Risk Analysis 2024 at Fraser Suites in Abuja. A landmark event that brought together key stakeholders and dignitaries to shape the nation’s emergency management strategy.

His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, graced the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour, delivering the keynote address. He commended NEMA, UNICEF, and key stakeholders for their collaborative effort in producing a comprehensive risk analysis document. According to the Vice President, “this initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring preparedness and effective response to hazards that threaten our nation. The dedication of all involved is truly commendable”.

NEMA’s Director General, Hajia Zubaida Umar, highlighted the significance of the Nigerian Hazard Countrywide Risk Analysis 2024 document, developed in partnership with UNICEF. She expressed gratitude to all contributors, acknowledging the rigorous efforts of experts from various government agencies, UN systems, and NGOs over the past seven months.

According to Hajia Umar, this initiative aims to better understand the evolving risks in Nigeria, drawing lessons from past disasters. The analysis covers 12 hazards, including flooding, epidemics, and conflicts, with a detailed breakdown to the Local Government Area level.

“The document  is not just a resource but a tool for strategic planning, ensuring that all levels of government and stakeholders are better equipped to mitigate and respond to disasters” she said.

Trond Jensen, Head of UN OCHA Nigeria, and Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Country Representative, commended NEMA for its exemplary leadership in developing the risk analysis document. They emphasized that this achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration in tackling Nigeria’s distinct disaster management challenges. By working together, NEMA and its partners have produced a comprehensive document that will undoubtedly enhance the country’s disaster preparedness and response efforts.

Members of the legislature, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawal, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, and Rt. Hon. Joseph Bassey, Chairman of the House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Management, delivered goodwill messages. They underscored the importance of legislative support in ensuring the success of emergency management initiatives. Former Deputy Speaker Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase also graced the occasion.

The highlight of the event was the official launch of the Hazard Countrywide Risk Analysis 2024. The Vice President, flanked by dignitaries from the high table, unveiled the document to applause, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s emergency preparedness efforts.

The event was attended by heads of government agencies, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and key stakeholders in emergency management. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to building a resilient nation.
