The Chinese Cultural Centre in Nigeria has identified tea as a critical element in fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding among nations.

Speaking at an event titled “The Art of Tea: A Chinese Tea Ceremony” and the unveiling of the Africa-China Tourism Expo 2025 in Abuja, the Director of the Center and Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Yang Jianxing highlighted the symbolic significance of tea in Chinese culture.

“Tea culture is an integral part of Chinese tradition, symbolizing peace, respect, and mutual sharing. Through this event, we hope to promote mutual understanding and friendship between China and Nigeria,” Mr. Jianxing stated.

He further explained that tea, alongside silk and porcelain, was one of the main commodities transported via the ancient Silk Road.

“Tea is not only a daily necessity for the Chinese people but also a global medium of communication. It brings harmony, promotes relationships, and fosters appreciation among people worldwide..Both China and Nigeria treasure harmony in relations with nature and people, promoting ethnic and religious harmony year by year”, he said.

The President of China Tourism Promoters, Mr. Phil Roberts described tea as a unifying product with medicinal and economic benefits. He urged Nigeria to harness its agricultural potential, including cultivating tea, to diversify its economy and boost GDP.

“Beyond consumption, tea has an industry of value chains, from ceramic wares to utensils, creating significant opportunities for economic growth. It is time to promote what we have. We should really cultivate the culture of tea, as it will increase the GDP.  The Chinese Embassy is showing us that there are things we can use to improve the economy and to take the country to the next level. Nigeria has good land and it is time Nigerians think of what they can do for themselves and the country”, he said

The Chairperson,  Nigeria’s Governors Spouses Forum, Dr. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, emphasized the role of events like this in strengthening Nigeria-China relations, particularly in tourism and cultural exchange.

“This event offers a platform for business networking and cross-cultural understanding. It also highlights sustainable partnerships in capacity building, skills development, and community projects. In this regard, we remain hopeful to collaboration and partnerships in the support of our intervention in the areas of capacity building, skills development, empowerment programs, and community development projects”, she noted.

The event, hosted by the Chinese Embassy, the Cultural Centre, and Chinese Tourism Promoters, concluded with a tea ceremony, cultural performances, and the official launch of the Africa-China Tourism Expo 2025. Participants experienced the richness of Chinese tea culture alongside a showcase of the cultural heritage of both nations.u
